

Dr. Bruce Wade

Assistant Professor of Sociology
Bruce is currently Director of Spelman College Census Information Center and Professor of Sociology. Bruce Wade earned his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. He completed his graduate work with concentrations in the sociology of health and research methods. He served a three year term as chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department and teaches Research Methods, Statistics, The Sociology of Health and other courses.
Between 2000 and 2005 Dr. Wade and faculty from several colleges (including Bard College, Bryn Mawr, Oberlin, Swarthmore, Trinity, Morehouse and the University of Capetown) taught a course on post-apartheid human rights and racial identity in the Republic of South Africa. Dr. Wade completed an evaluation of student perceptions and outcomes of the project. He has evaluated several prevention and risk reduction demonstration projects and other programs over the last 14 years including three substance abuse prevention programs for youth (funded by CSAP), two HIV prevention and outreach programs (funded by CDC) and two community coalition grants (funded by CSAP). He has also conducted focus groups for the Georgia Health decisions project.
Dr. Wade has published several articles and book reviews on racial identity formation, gender role expressions in hip-hop, environmental justice and gender based violence. His current research interests include HIV / AIDS prevention strategies among HBCU students and the human rights dilemmas facing black masculinity and black feminism.
