The Faces of Manhood Initiative is a programming organization intended to engage the campus community on issues dealing with masculinities and sexuality. Funding from the Ford Foundation has positioned Morehouse College to build the groundwork for dialog and conversation as we engage our constituencies to think more critically about the role that masculinities plays in the intersectionality of gender in the global context of the 21st century.

Particularly, we strive to encourage dialogue concerning the socio-cultural meanings of manhood, the consequences of being a man, the role of “men in society” and their relationships with others. We are neither a gay-straight alliance nor an advocacy organization; rather we focus on programming that encourages difficult dialogs. Nevertheless, we are an organization dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging critical conversations concerning gender roles, misogyny, patriarchy, sexuality and understanding the lived experience of men, particularly men of color.

The Faces of Manhood Initiative is a presidential level initiative with a mission to produce academically superior, morally conscious leaders, for stimulating dialogue and increasing literacy about masculinities, sex, sexuality, sexual expression, and healthy relationships in the context of the world gender order of the 21st century. We seek to better understand the institution’s role in providing the best educational experience that models the ideals of the “renaissance vision of the college.”
