Rev. Dr. Horace L. Griffin

Associate Professor of Field Education and Leadership Development
Horace L. Griffin is Associate Professor of Field Education and Leadership Development at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. An ordained priest in the Episcopal Church USA, he has served on the faculties of two Episcopal seminaries: The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York City and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. In addition, he served as Associate Priest of Youth and Family Ministries at All Saints Episcopal Church in Glen Rock, New Jersey from 2006-2008.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia in 1983; the Master of Divinity in Pastoral Care and Counseling from Boston University School of Theology, Boston, Massachusetts in 1988; and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Religion and Personality from Vanderbilt University Graduate Department of Religion, Nashville, Tennessee in 1995.
Griffin is a pastoral theologian in the field of pastoral care and counseling. He has specialized in gender and sexuality issues related to pastoral ministry and the Church. A former college professor, he began his career in the religious studies department at Fisk University. While teaching, he received the “Professor the Year Award” and became the first openly gay Department chair in the University’s 127 year history. He also co-chaired the Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice, a civil rights organization for gay citizens in Nashville and Middle Tennessee.
He has published numerous articles in peer journals and anthologies in pastoral care, including “Revisioning Christian Ethical Discourse on Homosexuality: A Challenge for the 21st Century” in Journal of Pastoral Care; and his most recent work, “African American Fathers and their Gay Sons in Listen My Son: Wisdom for African American Fathers, published this past March, 2010.
